Free (or cheap) expert font needed, if such a thing exists

Hello! I'm a bit of a linguaphile. Not only do languages and their structures interest me, but also their scripts and writing systems. Hence, I have an interest in typography as well, though I've not spent much time learning about it.

Now I need to do so, as I am self-publishing a book. So, I'm learning about book design, layout, margins, the history of the book, and all sorts of other interesting aspects of the process (yes, I'm a geek, and yes, this is fun!).

Here is my request: I need a font for the main text of the book. I want a serif font, with a bit of an "antique" feel to it (no irregularities, just an "older style" font). I want old-style numbers, ligatures, and small caps (hence, an expert set). I want a true italic of the same font (a true bold wouldn't hurt, either). I'm not sure of the exact point size yet, but it will be in the 10-11 points range.

If I had the money, I'd get Adobe Garamond and be done with it, but my wallet currently echoes if I yell too loudly. If I can't find what I want in the next couple of months or less, I'll save up and buy that, as I really enjoy that typeface. That should give you an idea of what I'm looking for, as well.

Any help would be appreciated. If you know of a cheaper font than Adobe Garamond, that would be great to know. Please excuse any mis-statements and my lack of typographical knowledge; I'm new to this, but I'm learning! :-)

help with creating syllabus for book making class

Hello! I have just recently joined this group, and I am looking for some assistance. I have previously taken a book making class, and learned how to do book binding. I also have made photocopied zines and many delicate hand made books that were more artful than readable. I have been given an opportunity to teach a book making class to senior citizens, and if the class is successful, I will be able to continue teaching. Next Spring I would like to teach an organic paper making class. What I need help with, is devising a simple syllabus that will be straightforward for senior citizens. I want the components of the class to be both simple, and focused on allowing the students to be creative with their projects. I want to ensure that paper layout is straightfoward, and that binding methods are not too complex. Any suggestions? Book suggestions? Links? All help is appreciated!

accordion books

hey guys,
I'm in the middle of designing an accordian book. The pages are folded and glued opposite eachother to create the accordion (make sense? I wish i could draw a picture..) I've been using a glue stick for the dummy model,
but I'm wondering if there's a better, stronger, longerlasting, archival adhesive for the final edition, that won't wrinkle the pages??
any suggestions?!

oh! I also need some suggestions for a sturdy paper that would work best for letterpress and silkscreen, that can take the glue, and also be stitched.

Book binders in the Bay Area?

I have a 130 book due as my end of semester project. Anyone know where I can bind it? I would prefer hardback binding of any kind (saddle stitch, library bound, etc).

The thing is, is that I need it done in a week. I don't mind paying rush fees, as long as I have something to turn in.

My book specs are 150 something odd pages. 70lb linen paper. 8x8" size.

I know it's pretty impossible, but do you guys have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Has anyone tried using rice paper in a printer??

I got this book from the library today that has some very cool ideas in it ("More making books by hand: exploring miniature books, alternative structures, and found objects" by Peter and Donna Thomas) and there's one I want to try RIGHT NOW but the only paper I have that's long enough to do what I want is rice paper which I bought for printmaking and I'm wondering if anyone has tried putting it in a printer, I'm kind of afraid it will just shred when the printer tries to grab hold of it and I dont' want it to get stuck in ther or I'd have tried it already.

I made these 35 books, blank on the inside, I screen printed a rough fleshy colored rectangle on the cover. The theme is s k i n. I have been doing mail art for some time now. I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors. If you would like to participate, please email me your address.

need ideas

i am thinking of producing 100 small books
i know a couple of bindings that are time consuming
so i plan to machine sew the edges or do some kind of acordion style thing
i have long sheets of paper that are about
26 by 5 inches
and i dont want to include very many pages, no more than like 10 with the bound edge
i am open to ideas does anyone know of any awesome fast binding or a way to add something to the machine stitches to fancy it up a bit. any suggestions?

I'm looking for an independent book printer that can quote me for a run of 1000 hardcover 3 1/2 x 51/2 and about 100 pages. 45 of the pages will have Chinese calligraphy. paper type is undecided. the hardcover maybe will have a cloth fabric. all B&W.
any information would be greatly appreciated.

My favorite binding that I have seen for modern books, particularly softcovers, is the "repkover" lay-flat binding.
The pages are sewn together in such a way that you can bend the spine >180 degrees and the pages will not fall out; in fact you are encouraged to do this so that eventually the spine will not tend to "collapse" the pages when open.

We first started using this binding for manuals published by a small non-profit I used to work for in 1992 or so. 11 years later I still rarely see this for anything other than a handful of computer manuals. Is anyone else here familiar with this binding? If so, why is it not more commonly used?

rebinding books

I'm currently working on rebinding my BoS. It was a hand-me-down from a friend. They bound the book using tooled leather and glue. I would like book that will stay open when laying on the table. Does anyone have any idea on how to do this at home?
